Jordan’s Minister for Energy, Mohammad Hamed, has declared that a new shale driven power plant will be built and operational by 2018 and will contribute to energy savings to the tune of $500m on an annual basis. It is the first of its kind in the region and the Minister has said it will account for circa one sixth of the country’s total power consumption and the government plans for the plant in later stages to also produce crude oil.
Another reason for this initiative is that it will significantly reduce the country’s reliance on imports.
