THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PREPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON THE RECONSTRUCTION EFFORTS AND TRANSFORMATION PLAN
San Juan – The executive director of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), Ricardo Ramos Rodriguez, presented the update report of the works undertaken for rebuilding the electric system after the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria, as well as the transformation plan of the public corporation to improve the quality of the service offered to the people of Puerto Rico.
Ramos Rodriguez reported that yesterday PREPA reached 42.4% of the generation, approaching the goal of 50% by November 15, 2017.
The executive director announced that, from November 2 to 7, PREPA continued to receive materials, equipment, and supplies, including 207 poles, 70 feet tall.
“This week we received part of the ordered materials, worth $50 million. These arrived by barge and include the supplies that will be used by Power Secure, four hundred workers from Fluor, over two hundred workers from Power Secure, other four hundred from Cobra Energy, and cargo with more than 260 poles, 40 feet tall”, said Ramos Rodriguez.
The executive director also spoke about the work carried out in the transmission lines to stabilize the electrical system and continue energizing more sectors of the metropolitan area, and other municipalities around the island. In addition, he mentioned lines completed by PREPA and its contractors, as part of the reconstruction of the electricity infrastructure.
Regarding the extra staff that will be added to the effort of restoring the electrical system, the official said that 3,000 additional workers, with the required equipment and tools, will be mobilized, most of them through the Mutual Aid Agreement of the American Public Power Association (APPA) and the Edison Electronic Institute (EEI). This mobilization will be staggered and must be completed around November 27.
“To strengthen our team and meet the goal established by Governor Ricardo Rossello Nevares, of restoring 95% of the generation by December 15, we have requested linemen specializing in mountainous terrain, five helicopters, personnel to coordinate the work logistics, as well as materials, resources and equipment available to the Governors of the states of Florida and New York”, stressed the executive officer.
With regards to PREPA´s transformation plan, Ramos Rodriguez commented that it consists mainly of the development of distributed generation and micro grids; providing stable power at a low-cost; building modern, efficient and world class generating plants; complying with environmental regulations; and, promoting the economic development of Puerto Rico.
He added that corporate initiative envisages to increase the use of technology to facilitate the processes, stabilize finances through the adoption of the Fiscal Plan; improve the service received by the customers; and, lead PREPA to a total transformation, aligned with the trends of the global electrical industry.
“We intend to transform PREPA and turn it into a modern, efficient and successful company that responds to the demands of our residential, commercial and industrial customers, and goes along with our island’s socio-economic development. In this effort we will include the tools provided by the Governor´s Plan for Puerto Rico, in particular the participatory public private partnerships in the area of power generation”, said the official.
